September brings cooler temperatures and the daily routine of packing lunches for school.

During the first Thursday back, I remembered to pack lunches for all three of my children — but forgot my own. At lunchtime that day, I found myself downtown with a crisp $10 bill and options all around me.

You would be surprised at the deals awaiting you and Sir John A MacDonald. Here’s a crowd-sourced list of the top meals under $10 in town.

Known for their pupusas and selection of Latin American products, America Latina Variety and Deli (331-B King St. W., Kitchener) now serves street tacos. You can choose between chicken or beef tacos. Three will set you back $7.95.

In a falafel kind of mood? Pick up a falafel pita with a multitude of toppings at Big Fat Pita (85 King St. W., Kitchener) for $6.

This month’s special at Cafe Pyrus (16 Charles St. W., Kitchener) is The Breakfast Club at only $9. This club consists of twelve-month-aged organic cheddar, bacon flavoured tempeh and tofu egg served on organic sourdough from Grainharvest Breadhouse Inc..

Grand Trunk Saloon (30 Ontario St. S., Kitchener) serves up its $5 grab-and-go sandwich special during lunch — and they sell out!

If the end of the week has you craving a burger, head over to Gilt (305 King St. W. Unit102, Kitchener). Gilt offers a $10 burger every Friday, served with bacon, cheese curds, fried egg, lettuce and tomato with hot sauce — all on a pretzel bun with choice of side. Available from 11:30 a.m. until the burgers sell out.

The Culinary Studio (740 Belmont Ave. W., Kitchener) has a different lunch special each day. Prices range from $6 to $10.

When I moved to Waterloo, the first thing my new co-workers did was take me to Vincenzo’s (150 Caroline St. S., Waterloo) for a sandwich. I challenge anyone to find a better sandwich for under $10 in town.

Each Monday, Ethel’s Lounge (114 King St. N., Waterloo) has an eight-ounce Jr. Ethel burger for $3.99, with a drink purchase.

Taco Farm (8 Erb St. W., Waterloo) has its own Wednesday special — Lunch on the Run, offering two featured tacos for $5. Available from 11:30 a.m. until they sell out.
